As promised by our travel buddy, Holyos, he will show us 7,641 ways to enjoy the islands of the Philippines. Our first place to visit is the magical province of Abra. Let us agree, for the sake of reference, we will start our ride meet-up at the zero-kilometer post in Manila. Let’s go!
Abra is approximately 407 km. from Rizal Park, Manila, and is almost 7 hours of travel time. Add two more hours for lead time if we choose to avoid tollways and highways. Seeing the Abra Junction, Manila North Road, Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, tells us we are just 45 min away from Abra Provincial Capitol.
So why is Abra magical? Here are the top three reasons why Abra is so magical.
Abra means “opening” and Tangadan Tunnel is the only access. As far as we all know or do we?! Does that mean if Tangadan Tunnel does not exist, there is no way we can visit Abra? Well, that was before. Back in the Spanish Era, locals used to access Tangadan Pass to visit neighboring towns in Ilocos. There is no record in our history that the Tangadan Tunnel and the Tangadan Pass are the same nor connected but Tangadan Pass separates Narvacan, Ilocos Sur from Abra.
Tangadan Tunnel is not just a welcoming tunnel but a symbol of rebellion against the Japanese forces during WWII. But hey, there’s another entry point and that is via Abra-Kalinga Road in the East so visit and enjoy the culture and nature.
Kaparkan Falls in Tineg dries up for seven months of the year. Dry falls? Really?! Yes, that’s right but visit it during the months of August and September and you’ll see the beauty of limestone terraces even better. Locals said its a natural state but hey, that is amazing. Where does the water go for seven months?
Old kilometer pole still exists to date in the royal path known as Camino Real. According to the locals, there’s only one found in Tayum, Abra. The other two old posts can be seen in the town of Ilocos Norte. This road was still called Camino Real and it measures 4.2 kilometers. “Camino” which means journey, stretches 75 kilometers from Vigan. Since only three exist to date, we can see our buddy strike a pose in the occurrence. Now try to Google search and it will show you a wall of an existing store. Do you think that’s the second one? What about the last one? Let us know.
We are sure you have a long list of why Abra is so magical. As Holyos Manuel tells us “DON’T LISTEN TO WHAT THEY SAY, GO SEE!”.
