What Bike is Best For You?

LIFESTYLE ON WHEELS – Leisure Rides

Our Siklista community has been increasing. The majority of these numbers are into bi-modal or bike to work commute since we are now living with the COVID-19.

For Cyril Anne Dayupay, 26, who works as a marine travel ticketing auditor in QC, she bikes to work and doubles as her exercise activity. She owns a CRIUS Master V in Red but also uses her older brothers’ FHNON foldie or her younger brothers’ TRINX MTB.

We ask her, “What’s your fave bike?”. She honestly stressed out, “JAP Bike” or Japanese Bike.

“I don’t know, medyo nakakababae kasi, pero I ask my self, will it be worth it after I purchase it? Gusto ko kasi yung magagamit ko sa ibang bagay.

Since my brother has a folding bike for 6 years now and I saw it na medyo reliable and matibay (of course pag-iingat na din), I bought a folding bike instead of a Japanese bike.”

Gusto ko din sana MTB kaso parang pag sumemplang ako nadaganan na ako ng bike sa bigat HAHAHA. Kiddin aside, it’s not what my fave, it’s all about the quality and purpose why I bike”

So what do you think is the perfect bike suited for you? Here are the top five bicycles you see around the Metro. We will not categorize them by type since that will go a long list.

Road Bike

Trekbikes.com described their road bikes as the best-in-class performance and hand-built carbon race machines. These are the lightweight, road-smoothing, aerodynamic bikes. These bikes work well on paved roads with narrow, high-pressure, and smooth tires to decrease rolling resistance. Dropped handlebars to allow riders to lean forward to reduce air resistance. And usually with derailleur gears to vary speed. This characteristic makes it lightweight in construction. (Photo source: JfG)

Mountain Bike

According to ninerbikes.com, this bike is for the aggressive rider who enjoys having the wheels of his/her bike leave the ground. Used by technical riders for rocky and fast downhill sections travel. Based on that description, this bike can handle off-road and trails. Definitely, it has a suspension fork, large knobby tires with durable wheels, powerful brakes, and straight handlebars. But this bike has been plying around the Metro. (Photo source: JfG)

Utility Bike

Urban bicycle, classic or vintage bike, or simply city-bike used for utility purposes- “errands”. You can wear your everyday normal clothes riding this bike but when used for commute, wear safety gear of course. Since it focuses more on comfort and practicality, it has an elevated handlebar making users in an upright sitting position. Often are heavier than road bicycles and with saddles, typically larger compared to other bikes. (Photo source: JfG)

Folding Bike

Ternbicycles.com/ph described their latest premium “foldie” as a bike designed for mixed-mode commuters who do a stretch of their daily journey on a train or bus or might grab a taxi home on a rainy day. So folding bike, regardless of its size, is simply a bike that can be folded and fits anywhere so all your transport options are always open. That’s the main reason why our online and physical bike shops have no stock of folding bikes this season. Very versatile, lightweight, and can be transported anywhere. Fixie Bike

A fixed-gear-bicycle that has a single speed and drivetrain with no freewheel mechanism. It became a popular alternative among mainly urban cyclists, offering the advantage of simplicity, less maintenance, and more lightweight compared with the standard multi-geared bicycle. Back then I only see them on circus bicycle stunts but now it was common and used by teenagers.

Some bikes are worth mentioning since we used to see them around.

BMX Bike

BMX or simply Bicycle Motocross, commonly used by freestylers and dirt bike racers and dirt-jumpers. Usually heavier as compared to most bikes. Its frame is mostly made of Steel but high-performance set-up uses a Chromoly frame making it lighter. Saddles almost touch the 20-inch wheels for better freestyle moves and jumps. Cruiser Bike

This is also referred to as a beach bike. Its upright seating posture and a single-speed drivetrain make it simple to maintain. Its steel construction with artistic styling makes casual bikers love this bike to ride around in a vacation-mode pedaling. In our country, this is commonly known as  “play bikes”. Yes, play bike since back in the day, only kids use this bike to play around, and only available in small sizes. Playbike Manila and Playbike Philippines, a group of playbike fanatics, continue to share this culture with us at our present time.
