LEISURE RIDES
In the time of lockdown, Filipinos creatively find ways to make life better during this pandemic situation. Most of our frontliners and health workers rely on free-rides offered by the government and institutions. The majority of them rely on bikes as their means of transport.
May 12, 2020, Manila time. The live meeting was attended by personalities, concerned citizens, and advocates of biking and cycling lifestyle. It was broadcasted live earlier this day via FB Live using the technology platform of Zoom and spearheaded by the Firefly Brigade.

Firefly Brigade promotes cycling as an environmentally sustainable form of transport that will make our cities, towns, and settlements better places to live in and take positive action for the environment and community.
Mr. Howie Severino and Mr. Jack Yabut, both are cyclists and advocates, carried out the meeting. They pointed out the values and possible implementation to address issues living in the new norm through cycling for a better living. How to cope up with this ground zero effect? What has to de done in this pandemic and the possible changes in leisure riding to the bikers’ lifestyle and community?

Mr. Ed Leuenberger from Davao City – Davao All Terrain Bikers Association, usually bikes his farm property ones or twice a week. With this pandemic, he turns into his trainer often to maintain his usual cycling practices. Mr. Jack Yabut from QC now spends his biking time with his stationary bike and do some short walk for his errands and visit co-workers within the area.
Now with this new normal lifestyle that everyone will be facing. Cyclist and advocates of active and leisure ride insisted to consider bikes as active and leisure transport. With the pending bill Sen. Pia Cayetano has filed, they stressed to integrate bicycles in the public transportation system, and the right time is now to discuss policies, infrastructure, and facilities that cater to this mode of transportation. It is time to change our mindset about traffic.

Mr. Sherwin Flores of MMDA shares what MMDA plans to pursue and improve pending projects in making Metro Manila and other areas to be bike-friendly. Almost 256 kilometers of what the bike lane of Quezon City responds to the original plan of making QC interconnected to other cities. The concerning factor of this project is the sustainability and maintenance that will possibly become unsafe to use. The majority of this lane has now limited access due to limited allotted space and worst becomes a parking area or pitstop for unloading and loading passengers of PUV’s.

Ms. Katti Sta Ana, founder of Firefly Brigade, quoted “The way the roads are designed are preferential prioritizing cars, we educate bikers on how to bike along with cars… We should change how we perceive and think of the bike as not just an alternative transport”

Mr. Paulo Burro of Bayanihan sa Daan Movement is pushing together government agencies to work together – DOTR, DOH, and DENR, to name a few, to adapt road-sharing.

Mr. Jack Yabut, 2015-19 President of Firefly Brigade, quoted, What can we immediately be done? Continue and wrap up support. Continue service training, basic maintenance, and viral effect of sharing – promise to share what you have learned. Show and how bike lanes and bike ordinances can be maintained and a call for a world bicycle day to work with the community and local government for development and engage in media for public awareness.

Howie Severino suggests taking this as an advantage and opportunity. It’s not a suffering but a sustainable out-of-the-box solution that is immediate and will help the community. It’s a winning strategy. Push these DOH guidelines even after the pandemic and continue networking to start and implement early for the post-pandemic that will go along way. Focus and synthesize what can we do immediately that is doable.

Ms. Mia Bunao of Explore Your City On a Bicycle – Philippines (#Kalyeyista) suggested expanding the BI-Modal Program that was existing a long time ago.
The cycling community has spoken with positive criticism. Act as one on how we will face the new normal.
