Yamaha cross-breeds a commuter scooter and sport-bike into an all-in-one purpose AT scooter model with the Yamaha Aerox.
Yamaha Aerox 2021, hmmm? Probably it has come to your attention, why do you need a scooter that can go 0 to 100 kph in a few seconds? Should you buy yourself a race bike instead, right? But in today’s modern riding lifestyle, we opt to multi-task. Work on a weekday and country side-trip ride with “buddies” on a weekend. Often, what transpires on your norm-riding is your control on speed and negotiating tight turns on traffic at the same time.
Luckily, motorcycle manufacturers like Yamaha, cross-breed a commuter scooter and sportbike into an all-in-one purpose AT scooter model with the Yamaha Aerox. Debuted last 2017 in the Philippines with an introductory price of P99,800.00, what’s new with the Yamaha Aerox 2021 that Filipinos still crave? We had the privilege to test ride the base model and here’s an alternative take of the Mio Aerox.
So let’s get down to the grind and have a closer look at the Yamaha Aerox 2021.
AESTHETIC DESIGN AND FUNCTIONALITY
At a glance, the all-new Yamaha Aerox 2021 looks sharper and bold. The position and functions of its controls are almost the same as compared to its previous model.
Except for the Aerox S that has a stop-and-start switch and Y-connect feature connectivity. Another is the enhanced instrument panel that seems to be accommodating as compared to the previous model.
But the aesthetic design has few adjustments for reconsideration. First is the aggressive-looking LED lights with daytime running lights and rear lights.
Second is the sportier fairing design. The previous Aerox might look sharp but the new Aerox is fiercer with an air-vent design on its side that adds up to its physique. But truly, both versions are good-looking.
The third is the redefined seat design for sport seating and at the same time for comfort as well.
Fourth is the re-shaped radiator cover and muffler protector. It seems smoother as compared to the sharper previous design. One thing for sure is it will accommodate less wind drag.
And lastly, the redesigned footboard can now accommodate more legroom for long-legged riders.
Some unnoticed changes are the shape of its front and rear fender and the position of its horn.
On the contrary, does this new version have a look-a-like? One thing is for sure, it has an elegant touch and design that is truly distinguishable as a full-breed Yamaha. Overall, with this design, it’s a two-thumbs-up.
THE VERDICT
Aesthetic design | Fiercer and Sportier Character |
Functionality | Designed to meet its purpose |
PERFORMANCE AND RIDE
The power is delivered with its liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, SOHC, 4-valve, 155 cm3 engine. Stopping power is delivered by its hydraulic single disc brake (230mm) and mechanical leading trailing drum brake on the rear.
Negotiating turns and unpaved roads are assisted with its front telescopic fork and rear suspension unit swing. It was further suppressed with its 110/80-14M/C 53P and 140/70-14M/C 62P tubeless front and rear tires respectively.
Basically, the specification is the same as compared to its previous model. But the ride response negotiating traffic, road-terrain, and all-out rev stretch to open roads can be felt differently. This is, in fact, due to its redesigned aesthetic providing a better posture and comfortable riding.
COMPRESSION RATIO | 11.6:1 |
MAXIMUM POWER | 11.3kW(15.4PS)/8000r/min |
MAXIMUM TORQUE | 13.9N・m(1.4kgf・m)/6500r/min |
However, 2021 improved its engine’s compression ratio, maximum power, and torque. It greatly contributes to better thermal efficiency, acceleration, and climbing capability with or without a pillion ride. Check out the full specification for more details. Conversely, will you trade off your race bike and buy yourself an AT scooter build for speed?
THE VERDICT
Performance | Responsive in negotiating traffic, road-terrain, and all-out rev stretch to open roads |
Ride | Comfortable for both rider and back-ride |
VALUE AND COST
The previous model is tagged at P99,800. The resale value is not bad upon checking some online shops. The majority of its sellers ask around P90,000 to P95,000. Maintenance cost is not that painful on your wallet. Lots of motorcycle service centers are everywhere and know how to service Aerox. Upgrading parts for your personal liking is not that hard also. After-market products designed for Aerox are also sufficient. As concluded, upgrading to a newer version or switching brands is not a bad option.
The base model of Yamaha Aerox is P112,900 and the Aerox S version is P132,900. For the base model, you can find dealers asking for a downpayment as low as P17,000 and a monthly payment of P5,097.
The Yamaha Aerox comes in Red, Dark Gray, RaceBlu, and Black Raven. The Yamaha Aerox S is a premium shade of Black Raven.
THE VERDICT
Value | Good value for resale if you decide to upgrade or switch brands. |
Cost | Not bad for a full-featured AT scooter build for speed |
