Yamaha celebrates its 70 years from a musical instrument to a world-class motorcycle global giant.
It’s incredible to look back 70 years and see how Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. came to be! Did you know this global powerhouse, founded on July 1, 1955, started as a musical instrument manufacturer? Nippon Gakki was already a leading name in music. Its president, Genichi Kawakami, decided to venture into motorcycles. Now known as Yamaha Corporation.

Why the sudden shift? Kawakami believed in seeking new opportunities, especially when business was good. Plus, during WWII, Nippon Gakki made aircraft propellers, so they had the machining tools ready for peacetime use! Despite being a “latecomer” to Japan’s already bustling motorcycle market (with 180 manufacturers!), Kawakami aimed for world-class standards, not just domestic success.

Their first bike, the 125cc YA-1, was a stunner. It was nicknamed “Akatombo” (red dragonfly) for its unique maroon and ivory colors. These colors were a stark contrast to the utilitarian bikes of the time. The YA-1 quickly made a name for Yamaha Motor. It dominated races and became a hit. Despite its hefty price tag, it is inspiring to see a vision take shape. With a little courage and dedication to excellence, a musical instrument maker transformed into a global motor giant!

Here’s a timeline of Yamaha Motor’s beginnings:
- 1887: Nippon Gakki (today’s Yamaha Corporation), a musical instrument manufacturer, gets started in the industry.

- Post WWII: Machining equipment used for propeller production is confiscated by the Occupation Forces and left dormant.
- Early 1950s (before 1955): Nippon Gakki’s fourth president, Genichi Kawakami, researches and considers new business opportunities. He chooses motorcycles partly to utilize dormant machining tools. He also anticipates growing demand due to changes in Japan’s vehicle licensing system. Development of a motorcycle model is undertaken in secret.
- January 1955: The 125cc YA-1 motorcycle is officially released.
- July 1, 1955: Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. is founded by spinning off the motorcycle divisions from Nippon Gakki, creating a new, independent company. This year marks its 70th anniversary.

- Over three years of production (from 1955): The YA-1 sells a total of 11,000 units.
