Maundy Thursday as published in the Advance Local Media website, Maundy is a Latin word that means “command” and is the day to commemorate the washing of the feet and the last supper.

Believers vow to do “Visita Iglesia”, visiting at least seven different churches on Holy Thursday or Good Friday. This is somewhat impossible to do since the NCR Plus Bubble has been installed and has been extended until Holy Week. Can you still visit churches in spite of restrictions and perform your vows to practice your faith?

For some, an online Visita Iglesia is enough but we carry on and visit churches around the Metro. Four wheels might confine some concerns on social distancing, parking, and time management so here are the churches visited for The ECQ- Visita Iglesia On A Motorcycle.

National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help

Baclaran, Paranaque City

Also known as the Redemptorist Church or Baclaran Church, is the biggest shrine in the world.  It is a famous international shrine and pilgrimage church in the world like Lourdes in France, Fatima in Portugal, Assisi in Italy, and Guadalupe in Mexico.

During the NCR Plus Bubble, Parking inside is not available for motorists, and cars are not allowed either outside. Motorcycles have a few slots available outside and manageable to leave for a quick visit inside the shrine.

Archdiocesan Shrine of Jesus, the Way, the Truth, and the Life

Reclamation Area, Pasay City

Found near the busiest shopping and business center in Pasay City, Mall Of Asia, and SMX Convention Center. This is the fulfillment of a dream the late Pope John Paul II when he visited the Philippines in 1995 for World Youth Day. The project was spearheaded by the then Archbishop of Manila, Jaime Cardinal Sin, DD.

Closed during the NCR Plus Bubble, ample parking space can be seen in the vicinity. Motorcycle users can stop for a moment and pray to stand in front of the church’s facade while guards are on stand-by watching their belongings.

Our Lady Of Remedies Church

Malate, Manila

This is a Mexican Baroque-style church that overlooks Plaza Rajah Sulayman and, ultimately, Manila Bay. Also known as Malate Church, has been associated with women’s ills and children’s diseases. Also famous as the “Virgin of Malate”, it has a distinct beauty of solid compact stone structure and overall ornateness of the design.

Parking is not a problem at the plaza. The guards are accommodating allowing patrons to stay at the facade. Pray under the shade of the trees while looking at the church’s Baroque-style details.

The Manila Cathedral-Basilica

Intramuros, Manila

The Premier Cathedral and the Premier Basilica of the Philippines. Pope John Paul II conducted his first mass in the Philippines last April of 1981, during the San Lorenzo Beatification, and made Manila Cathedral a basilica. It was also known internationally as Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception Manila Metropolitan Cathedral.

Strict observance of NCR Plus Bubble is implemented but numerous vehicles stop along the street. Lucky for motorcycle users since parking slots are available at the sides of the enclosed park plaza. You can leave your ride, do a closer selfie or stay at the facade for your prayers.

Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz

Binondo, Manla

Known as Binondo church,  it was formerly known as Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Parish. It was built for the Chinese living in the community to convert to the Christian faith. Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, the Filipino saint, resides in the area and practices Catholic Missionaries by deeds.

Police officers are so accommodating and allowed us to stay for a while. They even let the motorcycles park at the Plaza San Lorenzo Ruiz just across the Basilica.

Our Lady of the Pillar Parish Church

Sta. Cruz, Manila

Popularly known as Santa Cruz Church, was purposely built near the bank of Pasig River to answer the increasing suburban Chinese population in the area who had converted to the Catholic faith. Visit the church now and you can no longer see the river. Establishments grew in no time and it may look like the church was built in the middle of the city.

The church is not open to the public but the usual scenario can be seen. Parking inside is not permissible but motorcycles can stop in the middle of the plaza for a while overlooking the Spanish Baroque-style church.

Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene

Quiapo, Manila

Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene Parish of Saint John the Baptist Iglesia Parroquial de Quiapo seems hard to remember and even Waze-app might get confused. Known as Quiapo Church, is the home of the Black Nazarene, an image of Christ believed to be miraculous. Its Black Nazarene Procession is considered Manila’s biggest religious festival.

No parking is strictly observed and motorists are disciplined by numerous enforcers from Raon street to Quezon bridge. But lucky for motorcycle users, you can still enjoy stop-over, pray, and selfie.

Minor Basilica of San Sebastian

Quiapo, Manila

Best known as San Sebastian Church and is noted for the only steel building church in the Philippines and in East-Asia. The first church of the Recollect Friars in the Philippines and the pilgrimage site of Our Lady of Carmel since colonial times.

Visitors on cars wait in turns to move forward for a closer picturesque view of the church while motorcycles can park anywhere and have a closer view at the gate.

St. Alphonsus Mary de Liguori Parish Church

Magallanes Village, Makati

Also known as Magallanes Church as referred to as its location. It was rebuilt after the September 2004 tragedy. It still upholds and bears the design to be intimate and in a perfect square perimeter with a radical new look that would symbolize the rebirth.

The posh village allows visitors, both in the car and in the motorcycle to intimately pray and at the same time enjoy nature. Guards on duty humbly assist motorcycle users where to stop for quick parking while vehicles wait for turns for a closer stop near the church.
