Caltex Coastal Cleanup Marks 20 Years Protecting Turtles

Caltex recently celebrated its 20th annual Caltex coastal cleanup in San Pascual, Batangas. During the event, 293 dedicated volunteers collected nearly four tons of marine debris from a five-kilometer shoreline. Organized ahead of the Olive Ridley sea turtle nesting season, this vital initiative protects vulnerable hatchlings from dangerous plastic and waste. By safeguarding thousands of baby turtles over the years, the project highlights Caltex and its enduring commitment to environmental sustainability, community partnerships, and marine conservation across the Philippines.

Manila, Philippines, October 29, 2026—Every year from October to March, Olive Ridley sea turtles, locally known as pawikan, crawl ashore in San Pascual, Batangas to lay their eggs. For the 20th consecutive year, Caltex and its partners made sure to clear the coast for another successful nesting season.

Last September, 293 volunteers from Chevron Philippines Inc. (CPI), marketer of Caltex fuels and lubricants; Chevron Global Business Services (GBS) Manila; the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office of San

Pascual; and the Office of the Mayor of San Pascual combed five kilometers of shoreline along the Caltex San Pascual terminal. Together, they filled 397 sacks with 3,850 kilograms of garbage, clearing the beach ahead of the

nesting season that begins this October. More than an eyesore, debris, garbage, and flotsam are dangerous to the sea turtles. These can block female turtles from reaching dry sand and trap the hatchlings from getting to the sea.

Since Caltex began its cleanup 20 years ago, the terminal’s shoreline has seen a sharp rise in hatchlings: from 23 in 2022 to 768 in 2024 and 146 in 2025. Overall, 4,261 hatchlings have been released to the sea from the shoreline as of January 2026.

For San Pascual MENRO Environmental Management Specialist 1 Jucylita Garcia, Chevron’s yearly coastal cleanup also reminds residents to comply with solid waste management programs, as their trash can accumulate in coastal areas and affect marine life.

She added, “Chevron’s coastal cleanup is very helpful because even once a year, we can help maintain the cleanliness of our coast. We’re grateful that Caltex is committed to promoting environmental cleanliness, not just in San Pascual’s coastlines, but in the whole municipality as well.”

Batangas Terminal Manager Raymund Año said the annual cleanup underscores the importance of collective responsibility in keeping coastal areas clean while helping prepare the shoreline for the upcoming sea turtle nesting season.

“Waste from different areas can eventually find its way to our coastlines. Through this annual cleanup, our employees and partners have an opportunity to do their part in keeping the shoreline clean and helping create a safer environment for the sea turtles that return here to nest. It’s a meaningful way for us to work together and help pave the way for another nesting season.”

Caltex General Manager and Country Chairman Pongtorn “Bon” Tangmanuswong thanked the volunteers and partner organizations for their continued support, underscoring how sustained collaboration can help protect the environment and the communities Caltex serves. “This annual coastal cleanup shows what we can accomplish

when our employees, communities, and partners come together with a shared sense of responsibility for the environment. By caring for our coastlines and helping prepare them for the sea turtle nesting season, we are putting human energy into action in a way that creates a lasting, positive impact for both communities and the environment.”

The collected rubbish will be sorted for recycling, sent to the landfill, and disposed of safely. With the shoreline cleared, the DENR-trained guards will monitor the site and cordon off nesting areas. Caltex’s yearly coastal cleanup is just one of the many socio-civic efforts the brand regularly organizes.

More than just a top fuel and lubricants provider in the Philippines, Caltex remains committed to championing sustainability and encouraging volunteerism among its people, one CSR initiative at a time. For more updates on these CSR efforts, visit https://www.chevron.com/worldwide/philippines.
