Notable Bridges In The Islands Of Samar and Leyte

Riding from Luzon To The Gateway of The Visayan Islands

LIFESTYLE ON WHEELS – Motourism

When planning to leave the island of Luzon to visit and check out the beauty of the Visayas by land, the Batangas Port and Matnog Port are the key access points. Our tourist, Holyos Manuel, took us along the Pan-Philippine Highway to access the promising islands of Samar and Leyte via Matnog Port, Sorsogon. Then ferrying through San Bernardino Strait, which connects us into the port of Allen, in Northern Samar. This is the sea crossing point on the Pan-Philippine Highway.

Samar Island, the third-largest island of the Philippines,  seats near the island provinces of Leyte and Biliran. Notable bridges connect these three islands that are famous for their tourism attraction and stand as a major feat in the islands for economic growth.

Biliran Bridge, Biliran Island, Leyte. Back then, small boats were the only way to access Biliran Island. Sailing along the strait during stormy weather is a challenge and would have to wait for the wind and the sea to calm down. The Biliran bridge was completed around November of 1975 during the Marcos term, spanning about 150 meters long. What makes this bridge remarkable is this bridge is still the only access by land of the entire island-province to the island of Leyte, and practically, of the entire Philippines.

Agas-Agas, Brgy Kahupian, Sogod Southern Leyte. The breathtaking view from its view deck proclaims this is no ordinary bridge.  It was constructed during the term of former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to assist locals to keep motorists on mobile and away from landslides during heavy rains. Since typhoon strikes the province often, the bridge was installed at about 350 meters high making it the highest bridge in the country. Tourists often visit in numbers especially in the early morning to witness the clouds covering underneath it. If you’re lucky, bungee jumpers and zipline addicts can also be found doing their extreme sports.

San Juanico Bridge, Tacloban, Leyte. An engineering breakthrough back in the 60’s when former president Ferdinand Marcos announced during his campaign, establishing economic growth and tourism in the area.

“Alam niyo ba, na ang hugis ng Tulay ng San Juanico ay dinisenyo ayon sa mga unang titik ng Isla ng Samar at Isla ng Leyte? kung patungong Leyte bago pa makarating sa tuktok ng tulay ay hugis titik “L” at kung nasa tuktok naman ng tulay patungong Samar ay hugis titik “S”.

– Holyos Manuel, 7th Philippine Looper Conqueror

San Juanico Bridge is part of the Pan-Philippine Highway linking the islands of Samar and Leyte. It stretched 2,200 meters long making it the longest bridge in the Philippines. As the bridge is already a day-time attraction, the aesthetic lighting and sound show installed last August 2020 adds relevance to visit at night.

Luckily, these bridges are part of your itinerary on your Philippine Loop Tours. Is it time to check these bridges out and see them by yourself? Strike-A-Selfie? Follow the Motourism Adventures of Holyos Manuel and do check what’s hot in the islands of the Philippines on Wheels.
