SLEX implements a two-tranche toll hike starting January 2026. Explore the new rates and how motorists are reacting online

The holiday celebration is over, and we return to our usual routine. As the New Year sun rose over the Alabang viaduct this January, South-bound motorists were met with more than just the usual post-holiday traffic. The first phase of the SLEX toll rate adjustment is now officially in effect. For the thousands who call Laguna and Batangas home, it’s a lifestyle pivot we didn’t exactly put on our 2026 vision boards.
The Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) has greenlit a staggered increase to fund “safer and faster” travel. For a Class 1 vehicle driving from Alabang to Calamba, the rate has jumped to ₱126.00. If you’re heading all the way to Sto. Tomas, you’re now looking at a total increase of ₱13.00 per trip.

But while the official press releases speak of “periodic adjustments” and “system improvements,” the comment sections on their social media page (Toll Regulatory Board) tell a raw, different story. The consensus among the “Southies” is a mix of fatigue and skepticism. Here is the most common outcry: Value for money.
Motorists are voicing valid frustrations over persistent potholes:
- The weekend “quick escape” to Tagaytay now requires a bit more intentional budgeting.
- “ghost” RFID sensors that refuse to scan. The irony of paying a premium for a “fast” expressway that often feels like a parking lot during rush hour.
- Carpooling apps are seeing a surge in sign-ups. With the second tranche of the hike coming in July 2026, many are already rethinking their commutes.

Everyone wants world-class roads, and maintenance isn’t free. However, as the RFID balances drain a little faster this month, the expectation for a flawless “crater-free” driving experience has never been higher. For now, motorists adjust their budgets and hope the promised “convenience” finally catches up to the cost.
