Due to its location, the Philippines is a country that is highly susceptible to earthquakes. Situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire and crisscrossed by multiple active fault lines including the West Valley Fault, the threat of seismic activity is always present, which means that everyone, including motorcycle riders, must be ready at all times.

To help you stay prepared, we listed down a few important tips to remember so you’ll know what to do before, during, and after an earthquake if you’re a motorcycle rider:

If you are riding when the shaking starts
Stay calm and gradually slow down. Do not brake or swerve suddenly. Look for a safe spot to pull over, away from power lines, trees, overpasses, or anything that could fall. Turn off your engine and stay alert to your surroundings. If there are no nearby hazards, you can stay on your bike, but if needed, dismount and move to a clear area.

If you are idle or stopped at a traffic light
Keep your balance and remain aware of falling objects. When the shaking subsides or when it is safe to do so, move to the side of the road and park in an open area. Avoid waiting near walls, buildings, or tall structures.

If you are away from your motorcycle
Your personal safety comes first. Move to a wide, open area and protect your head from falling debris. Do not attempt to run back to your motorcycle during the shaking. After the tremor, check for hazards before returning to your vehicle.

After the earthquake
Be cautious of aftershocks. These may follow minutes or even hours after the main quake. Avoid riding immediately if roads are visibly damaged or if there are reports of unsafe conditions. If you must continue, ride slowly and carefully, check the news for road damages, avoid routes leading to bridges, and watch for cracks, fallen objects, or unstable infrastructure.

Inspect your motorcycle and gear
Before getting back on the road, check your motorcycle for any damage. Look at the tires, brakes, and other critical components. If anything seems off, do not risk riding until it is properly checked.
